Note: The Bible Reading Convention Event is only for participants, Grades 3-6. For Grades 7-12 Bible Reading Rules, please refer to Pre-Convention section of this Manual.
PURPOSE: This event provides an opportunity for young people, Grades 3-6, to motivate one another and develop skills through the oral reading of the Scripture.
PROCESS:
Each congregation will:
- Have each participant choose a reading from the Old or New Testament.
- Choose a reading from a Standard translation, no paraphrases.
- Properly register each participant.
- Provide one judge for every four male participants, and one judge for every four female participants.
The Event Director will:
- Oversee judging and rooms.
- Review judging forms and report results to Awards Committee.
- Provide critique sheets to all participants.
RULES:
- A brief introduction is required. The entire presentation, including the brief introduction and Scripture reading, is not to be less than one minute or more than two minutes in length. Participants will be penalized five points for any time under one minute or over two minutes. Therefore, aim for one minute, thirty seconds.
- There will be three Judges and a Timekeeper. An award rating will be assigned based on the point average between the three Judges.
- Spectators may not leave or enter the room while participants are speaking.
- Video or audio equipment must be set up prior to the event and must be stationary. No participant may be taped without their advance approval and appropriate notification to the Judges.
- The participant should not attempt to explain or interpret the passages. A brief introduction is required. However, participants should place major emphasis on the actual Bible reading and not on prepared statements. The identification of the passage, the translation, and the setting of the passage together should not exceed 20 seconds.
- Participants will be penalized if the identification and introduction exceeds 20 seconds. Participants will also be penalized if they omit identification of the passage and translation. Memorization is neither required nor encouraged. The ability to read the passage is what is being judged.
- There will be no podiums available for this event
AWARDS:
- Participants will be judged as individuals and not on a grade-level basis.
- One of the following award ratings will be assigned to each participant based upon the point average between the three Judges' sheets.
Gold = 95-100 points; Silver = 85-94 points; Bronze = 70-84 points; No Award = 0-69 points
- An appropriately colored engraved plate for the individual's Award Plaque will be given to each person receiving a Gold, Silver or Bronze Rating.
