WHAT IS READER'S THEATER?

Reader's Theater is a dramatic presentation of Scripture. The art of Reader's Theater is to be able to create a story with the voice. The object of Reader's Theater is to develop an imaginary picture in the mind of the audience members. In Reader's Theater it is your job to work with your team members and use each other's creativity to come up with a way to portray the Scripture so that it captivates the audience. It is important for each participant to respect, honor, and understand the Scripture passage, so the team is able to paint a picture of the story to the audience. For example consider the story of Daniel and the Lions' Den where Daniel was put into the lions den because he prayed daily to God. In reading this story it is quite apparent that Daniel had a strong love for God, even though he was threatened to be thrown into a den of lions for praying; he still prayed faithfully. Upon reading this story to the audience the picture must be painted of how faithful Daniel was to God, in that he continued to pray even though he had received such a horrible threat. With the unique art of Reader's Theater props are not allowed so each team must ask, "how can we portray Daniel's faithfulness to God with our voices, facial expression, and hand movements?" Some ideas could be changing voice tones, placing team members around the room, having each member of the team read a certain character or have soft sound effects. There are quite a few creative ideas that each team will develop as the Scripture is read and the question, "how can I captivate my audience?" is answered.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS I CAN PREPARE?
