PURPOSE: This event develops the ability to express spiritual feelings and thoughts in the form of rhyme and verse.
PROCESS: Each participant will:
- Write an original poem whose content reflects the current year's theme.
- Ensure that the poem is typewritten, no larger than size 14 font, not in script font, and does not exceed one page. (Italics may be used. Italics keep the individual letters separate making it easier to read than a script font which links the letters together.)
- Mail the following to the Event Director (E-mail and fax entries are
not acceptable.):
- Four copies of the poem and one cover sheet
- A stamped postcard with the Church Coordinator's mailing address if receipt confirmation is requested.
THE PACKAGE MUST BE POSTMARKED BY MONDAY, February 25, 2008
The Event Director will:
- Send confirmation of receipt to the Church Coordinator if a stamped postcard is included.
- Organize the poems for judging.
- Return judging and critique sheets to the Pre-Convention Director with all award recommendations.
- Provide a copy of the poem to be displayed at the convention.
RULES:
- The poem may be written in any meter or rhythm. It does not have to rhyme. Poems that do rhyme can adhere to any rhyme scheme.
- Submit one cover sheet with the four copies of poetry. The format for the cover sheet is under paragraph 1 of "Submission."
- Adult assistance should be essentially verbal. Adults may discuss the theme and possible poetic applications. Adults may also make verbal suggestions on content and style, and point out editorial corrections on the participant's written work.
- Poems must be typewritten, no larger than size 14 font, not in script font, and must be a minimum of five lines and not exceed one page. (Italics may be used. Italics keep the individual letters separate making it easier to read than a script font which links the letters together.)
- Send only original poems. No part of poem may be copied. For example, "Roses are red, Violets are blue..." is not acceptable.
