Scripture Challenge 2008

PURPOSE: This event promotes the habit of memorizing at least 100 verses from Scripture each year. It encourages memory work as a part of the Bible class program. It promotes the use of quoted Scriptures in lessons and conversations. It promotes the study of Scriptures as a positive replacement for time now consumed by the telephone, television, and radio.

PROCESS: Each participant will:

• Memorize the Scripture verses in the provided list.
• Mail the following to the Event Director:
  • The completed verified Award Certification Form
  • A stamped postcard with the Church Coordinator's mailing address if receipt confirmation is requested.

THE PACKAGE MUST BE POSTMARKED BY MONDAY, February 25, 2008

The Event Director will:

• Send confirmation of receipt to the Church Coordinator if a stamped postcard is included.
• Provide a list of award recommendations by grade categories to the Pre-Convention Director.

RULES:

1. Verses can only be memorized from the Standard List provided in these rules.
2. The participant may use any translation except those referred to as paraphrased or condensed.
3. Memory work should be quoted according to the chosen text.
4. The participant may use a list of Scriptures during the sittings but may have no other notes.

The local program coordinator will specify one or more individuals to listen to participants and verify their accomplishments. He or she must certify that the participant has memorized their verses. Note: Our goal is to encourage putting God's word in our hearts. A participant may become discouraged and want to quit when trying to recite "verbatim", therefore it is suggested that 3-4 grades be permitted "3 helps" per 10 verses, 5-6 grades have "2 helps" per 10 verses, and 7-12 grades "2 helps" per 25 verses (7-12 grade should be able to recite 10 verses without help). A "help" is defined as a word or two said to the participant when they are "stuck" while reciting. Again - We want to ENCOURAGE (not discourage) Scripture memorization.

SUBMISSION OF CERTIFICATION FORMS:

Certification Forms are to be sent to the Scripture Challenge Director at the address listed at the top of the event page.

AWARDS:

• Each grade level will be rated by the following scale:
  • Gold Rating - 100 verses in 4 different sittings
  • Silver Rating - 50 verses in 2 different sittings.
  • Bronze Rating - 25 verses in 1 sitting.
• Appropriate-colored engraved plates for the individual's award plaque will be presented in each grade category and for all three ratings.
